the Union Address, as a very important political speech, has attracted many scholars’ attention in China. Comparatively, it hasn’t received enough attention abroad. There are few foreign scholars who have conducted a research about State of the Union Address. Executive Office of the President (1997) studied Clinton’s State of the Union Address, delivered on February 4, 1997. In this document, they paid attention to Clinton’s first priority which was to ensure that all Americans have the best education in the world. Colleen J. Shogan and Thomas H. Neale (2010) wrote the article The President’s State of the Union Address: Tradition, Function, and Policy Implications in which they studied the development and tradition of State of the Union Address. They also studied the policy impact of State of the Union Address. William Galston (2012) examined President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address which discussed the specifics of the President’s message as it is related to the economy, President Obama’s record, and Congressional politics.

This chapter serves as the foundation of establishing a new discourse analysis model for State of the Union Address. It consists of two parts: the theoretical framework and the methodology of this
thesis. It will begin with a focus on Kenneth Burke’s Identification Theory, and then a brief introduction of methodology will be presented.
2.1 The Theoretical Framework
This part mainly focuses on the introduction to Identification Theory and the Identification strategies. It will provide us with overall understanding on the theoretical framework of the thesis, which will help us know the two types of strategies of Identification Theory well. Identification Theory, the key conception of Kenneth Burke’s New Rhetoric, attempts to make people united and induces interpersonal cooperation. According to Burke, when one wants to persuade people of his viewpoints, the rhetor must endeavor to identify the audience in the same way of speaking with him, such as using the same gesture, tone and image. As is illustrated in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (6th edition), Identification takes root in “substance”, which is the most important or main part of something. We are who we are when we have our unique substances
