Conceptual Integration Theory has a powerful explanation, and many linguists have used it to explain unconventional language phenomena, such as humor, pun etc.. Therefore, the author tends to use this theory to study the cognitive mechanism of transferred epithet. It is hoped that this contrastive research not only is helpful for cross-cultural communication, but also could help people obtain a deeper understanding of CIT, and have a better understanding of the meaning construction mechanism of Chinese and English transferred epithet, as well as understand and appreciate more clearly how the author uses transferred epithets in the texts.

Chapter Two Literature Review
Transferred epithet, as a figure of speech, has drawn worldwide attention of rhetoricians and linguists for many years because of its great significance in communication. And great achievements have been achieved, which will lay a solid foundation for the studies of the coming researchers. In this chapter, the author will show a general review of the researches of transferred epithet from the following several aspects: definition, classification, and previous studies from different perspectives.
2.1 Definitions of Transferred Epithet
“Transferred epithet”, as one of the most effective and specific figures of speech, derives from Greek word “hypallassein”, which means “an exchange, interchange”. Chen Wangdao (2001) is the first person who puts forward this term of rhetorical device in the Origin of Rhetoric, which is considered as the first fundamental rhetorical literature in modern China. In Chinese rhetorical
history, Tang Yue (1923) is the first person to discuss this phenomenon in his book Figure of Speech, but in that book the term “yijiu” is named “qiandege”. Because scholars either in western countries or China have different cognitive points of view, so there exist many different definitions.
