Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 The Notions of Cooperative Principle and Conversational Implicature
According to Grice (1967), in order to make the exchanges between the speakersand hearers smoothly, they must follow some rules. There is some regularity inconversation, people cooperate with each other in a conversation. That is to say, whenwe engage in a conversation, we must follow certain principle to make our exchangein accordance with the purpose of both sides. And this principle is what we call ascooperative principle. In order to clarify the CP in detail, Grice introduced fourcategories of maxims — quantity, quality, relation and manner.Grice pointed out that people usually do not express their real purpose directlybut to imply them by flouting the use of conversational maxims when wecommunicate with each other in daily life , which is called conversational implicature.

Grice supposed that when people talkwith others, they may violate one or several maxims of CP, thus producing theimplication beyond literal sense. After him, Leech and Brown & Levinson proposed their politeness theory,Austin and Searle put forward Speech Acts as the supplementsto the CP principle. The cooperative principle has been applied to many areas as in the studies sinceit was proposed by Grice in 1967. Foreign scholars apply the theory more areas thenChinese scholars. In the first place, from the perspective of education, foreignscholars apply the CP to analyze the class conventions. Friel and Mercer, Edwardhave contributed a great deal to class conventions. They paid attention to that Grice’smaxims tend to clarify the principle by which both of the sides in the conversation areable to get the shared information which is some kind of catalyst for them to co
