Chapter Two Literature Review
In this chapter, the author reviews some literature related to the current research. Itstarts with the knowledge of ESL writing theories. The subsequent sections areContrastive Analysis, Error Analysis and the related studies in China.
2.1 ESL Writing
According to Zuo (2002), the writing has a long history of more than 6000 years.There have been numerous studies of ESL writing in the history of language teaching.
2.1.1 The Nature of Writing
There are many definitions about writing. The widely accepted one is to expressideas and opinions with written words and sentences. Writing activities involve the use ofEnglish vocabulary, grammar and text to express ideas in a meaningful and logical way(Grabe & Kaplan, 1996). In other words, writing is a way of expressing ideas.Smith (1982) suggests that no matter how proficient one is in writing, goodcomposition does not stem from the mere practice of writing. It is a complicated processof taking down what is in one's mind to represent one's ideas and to convey a message toothers. In fact, when writing, individuals must depend on their past experiences, emotions,familiarity with the writing of others and attitudes toward writing itself. Therefore, mostof writing aims both to reach an understanding and to share that understanding with otherpeople.
