Chapter I Introduction


1.1 Background of the study

Most students in vocational schools graduate from rural junior schools in Hebei. Thestudy was three years in vocational schools. In the first year, the students are provided withfour basic courses, including Chinese, Politics, Mathematics and English. Besides thesebasic courses, students also learn three or four professional courses according to the majorsin the first year. Students concentrate on learning professional courses in the second yearand they are assigned to different places to practice in the third year. Students in vocationalschools are required to master practical skills. The leading task of vocational schools is toqualify students who possess practical skills and self-confidence for their future work.Textbooks are Basic English I-II which are published by Higher Education Press, widelyused in Hebei vocational schools. The structure in each unit includes: Lead-in, Listeningand Speaking, Reading and Writing and Language in use. Two textbooks need students tograsp everyday vocabulary and simple tenses which are frequently used in our daily life.Generally speaking, there are two examinations during the semester: mid-term exam, finalexam.Most students at researcher’s vocational school graduate from rural junior school inHebei, their English level is very poor. In the year of 2010, the researcher distributed aquestionnaire to learn about English learning among 400 new-comers. The results showedthat the average score of the high school entrance examination was 41. The highest markwas 72, while the lowest score was 0. They did not have opportunities to practice listeningand speaking skills and knew little about grammar. Meanwhile the results indicated thatstudents’ vocabulary was very indigent. The average words they mastered were only 200.Only 11% students’ vocabulary reached 400 words. Some students even can not rememberthe 26 English alphabets and most of them remember words letter by letter.
It is true that most students in vocational schools aged 14 to 18 have different lifeexperiences and different characters. They choose vocational schools for study mainlybecause they failed the high school entrance examination. From the teachers’ view, they are not “top students” in the junior middle school. To some extent, they were given up byteachers. In fact, some students in vocational school have unpleasant life stories. About 5%students come from “divorced families” or “ broken families”. Some of them becomesensitive and aggressive. Their parents feel disappointed at their behavior. So incomparison with their peers, most students in vocational schools feel inferior. In otherwords, they lack self-confidence. This psychological problem may influences students’English study in the following two aspects:


1) Negative attitudes toward English learning
