4.1 Translator Behavior in Material-Folklore Aspect

The material folklore in Tales of Hulan River mainly includes local food,clothing,building,transportation,agricultural appliances,commercial appliances,indigenous“medicine”,furniture and stores.The thesis lists out all examples of these material folkloreand categorizes them,finding out that most of them are objects represented by words such as“栈房”while the rest are special behaviors or events carried by objects,such as the way thatlocal people do their laundry.

Since the relevant examples are in large quantity,which are difficult to be analyzed allof them respectively,the thesis needs to select some of them to further conduct the analysis.However,the selection of examples will be subjective without any references.Meanwhile,since Zhuang(1995:86)said that“there are many implicit elements in Chinese,and thepremise of understanding implicit elements in a text is to understand the context of it”,thethesis thinks Goldblatt’s translation of these examples can be better analyzed with the help ofanalyzing the context.Based on these,the thesis applies AntConc 3.5.8 in this section inorder to select examples appropriately and analyze them with the help of context.
