In order to have a better review on previous studies on Tales of Hulan River,the thesisdivides academic studies on the work at home into three periods,based on the number ofstudies.The first period is from 1982 to 2000 only with rare researches on the work.Thesecond one is from 2000 to 2010,in which relevant researches increased steadily.And whenit comes to 2010,the year of commemorating the centenary birthday of Xiao,relevantresearches began to grow rapidly.Increasing academic researches not only prove theresearch value of the work,but also provide various perspectives for relative scholars tofurther analyze the work and its translation.

(1)Studies in the first period are mainly remarks on the book.The thesis thinks thatalthough studies in this period are mostly remarks,they set up the tone for latter researcheson the work,emphasizing the social background of wartime,rebellion against feudalism andthe inner world of people in Hulan town,serving as references for later studies.

(2)Studies in the second period tend to be more specific.Besides remarks similar toprevious studies,there are mainly two focus points in this period,including the narration ofthe work and folk customs in the work.Although studies on narration of the work are inpreliminary stage,the feasibility of these studies partly answers the controversy over thestructure and style of the work and provides new perspectives to further analyze it.Thethesis thinks that studies in the second period are more specific than before.It is interestingto find out that the analyses of Xiao’s attitude towards Hulan town and feudal traditions existthroughout the whole process of these studies.

2.2 Previous Studies on the EnglishTranslation of Tales of Hulan River

In section 2.2,previous studies on the English translation of the novel both at home andabroad will be given,in the hope of providing references for the analysis part.

2.2.1 Previous Studies on the Translation of Tales of Hulan River at Home

Up to now,there have been two English translated versions of Tales of Hulan River atthe market of publication,which are both from Howard Goldblatt.It is found that studies onthe English version of the novel at home mainly start from the year of 2010 and increase at arelatively slow rate.Among these studies,dissertations outnumber journal articles evidently,which the thesis believes,can provide more systemic and detailed studies for followingscholars on certain aspects.These studies are mainly carried out from following aspects:

(1)There are studies on the translation of the folklore.Studies on the folklore translation account for a large proportion in this field.Among them,Shen(2014)appliedmanipulation theory in her study,trying to dig out the influence brought by patronage,ideology and poetics when dealing with folklore translation.It is worth mentioning that inthe part of analyzing the patronage,she mentioned an important person,Goldblatt’s PhDadviser Liu Wuji.With Liu’s advice,Goldblatt translates the novel efficiently,which is laterpublished by Indiana University Press.She then pointed out that Goldblatt’s translation offolklore weakens the ghost factor of the original text and adds the religious connotation ofthe West.And she proved that the manipulation of poetics lays in the text structure,idiomexpression and characterization of the work with relevant cases(Shen,2014:11-16).Although def本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
