Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Metaphor is pervasive in everyday life. Therefore, since Aristotle (1954), a growing number of scholars, such as Richards (1936), Nowottny (1965), Reddy (1969, 1974), Lakoff and Johnson (1980), have been devoted to the study of metaphors. Even though insightful outcomes have been achieved in this area, they still largely restrict themselves to the account of the single metaphors or micrometaphors, which are still sentence level phenomena. As a matter of fact, metaphorical linguistic expressions are at various levels. On the ground of Wang Yin (2007), in terms of operational levels, metaphors can be classified into four types which include phonetic metaphor, lexical-sentential metaphor, suprasentential metaphor and grammatical metaphor. That indicates the study of metaphors could exists at suprasentential level and the research on metaphors could be shifted from the conventional lexical-sentential level to a larger level which is the suprasentential level or discourse level. It is worth mentioning that Paul Werth (1994, 1999) noticed that possibility a long time ago, and first put forward the notion of “megametaphor”, whereby a specific metaphorical concept can be developed and extended through a discourse or text. Besides, he (1994) also holds the view that megametaphor is an exclusive property of literary texts, e.g. poem, play or novel. However, Piller (1999) proves with examples that the employment of megametaphors is not confined to literary text but can also be found in other genres as long as whose communicative aim is persuasive. As a result, megametaphor can emerge in various discourses. It is generally known that inaugural address plays an influential role in political life and is particularly effective in convincing the audience. In consequence, it is common that megametaphors always show up in American presidential inaugural addresses. In addition, according to Oswald and Rils (2014), megametaphor can be adopted as a
strategy in discursive context where they want to convince the audience and the careful construction of a megametaphor may positively influence speakers’ credibility and trustworthiness as well as the audience’s perception of the truth of the message. Consequently, the exploitation of megametaphors in American presidential inaugural addresses is not only feasible but also consequential. However, only few, if any, of current researches are conducted on megametaphors in American presidential inaugural addresses, let alone the researches that investigate them from the cognitive perspective.
