摘要:As a new branch of linguistics, cognitive linguistics has become more popularbecause it illuminates many complicated linguistic problems. In fact, it also bringsabout a challenge against traditional pedagogical methods.

n the basis of the theoretical discussion, it can be assumed that conceptualmetaphors can facilitate English idiom teaching and learning. However, they are rarelyadopted in actual teaching methods now.


Chapter Two Literature Review


This chapter generally contains review of the studies on idioms and theoriesrelated to this present study. Section 2.1 presents the nature of idioms in whichdefinitions and classifications of idioms are discussed. Section 2.2 provides thetheoretical foundation of this thesis, including conceptual metaphor theory and imageschema theory. Section 2.3 is the introduction of two linguistic views on idioms.Section 2.4 introduces the cognitive view on the meaning of idioms. In section 2.5, abrief review of studies on idioms and idiom acquisition is given. Section 2.6 serves asthe summary of this chapter.


2.1 Nature of Idioms


2.1.1 Definitions of Idioms
There are many types of definitions for “idiom”. This part presents differentdefinitions of idiom given by authoritative dictionaries and some scholars and linguistsboth at home and abroad. Here are some definitions from authoritative dictionaries:(1) Idiom is an expression established in the usage of a language that is peculiarto itself either in grammatical construction or in having a meaning that cannot bederived as a whole from the conjoined meanings of its elements (Webster’s ThirdNew World International Dictionary, 1976).(2) A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deduciblefrom those of the individual words (New Oxford Dictionary of English, 1998).(3) An idiom is an expression which functions as a single unit and whose meaningcannot be worked out from its separate parts (Longman Dictionary of AppliedLinguistics, 1985).(4) A phrase, construction, or expression that is recognized as a unit in the usageof a given language and either differs from the usual syntactic patterns or has ameaning that differs from the literal meaning of its parts taken together (Webster'sNew World College Dictionary, 3rd edition, 1996)
