However, due to the different classifications and definitions of metaphor andsimile in Uyghur and English, and lack of relevant knowledge, the author findsdifficulties to categorize those terms under either “Metaphor” or “Simile” categoriesto compare with English metaphors. Therefore, this phenomenon in Uyghur languagewill not be discussed in this thesis.

 

1.2 Research methodology and Data Collection
As far as research methodology is concerned, this research is mainly qualitative.Specific methods adopted in this research include description, illustration, comparisonand causal analysis. All the data used for this research is collected from dictionaries(English-Chinese, Uyghur-Chinese), internet (Google search, Wikipedia etc.,) andbooks that closely related to the research. For convenience, the “Uyghur Latin-Script(Uyghur Latin Yeziqi)” has been selected to describe all of the examples (words,phrases, sentences, etc.), quotes and references that are written in Uyghur language.

 

1.3 Significance and Objectives of the Thesis
This research has theoretical and practical significance. Theoretically, thisresearch by itself can prove the universality of cognitive process of human beings,regardless of the differences in race, culture and civilization. Practically, the formerstudies on plant terms in Uyghur are mainly focused on the differences of theculture-loaded meanings of certain plant words. There are no systematic classification,description and contrast of plant metaphors between Uyghur and English. Since manycognitive linguists claim that metaphors, rather than traditional figures of speech, arecognitive processes that help to create and maintain people’s view of culture (Gibbs,1994), this research can also be seen as a great supplement to the recent studies onUyghur and English cross-cultural communication perspectives. In addition, thefindings of this research can also be applied to the English as a foreign languageclassroom. It can be of great help for teachers and students to increase theirunderstandings and enlarge their knowledge on Uyghur and English plant metaphors.The thesis is of great significance to the author himself in which the author tries tomake a further research on comparative study of Uyghur and English metaphors in thefuture.In the hope of making contribution to the research of plant metaphor, the task Ihave set myself in this paper is to conduct a systematic comparative study of plantmetaphors in Uyghur and English from a cognitive point of view. Based on this, theresearch is intended to answer the following questions:1. What are the similarities of plant metaphors in English and Uyghur?2. What are the differences of plant metaphors in English and Uyghur?3. What are the causes of similarities and differences of plant metaphors in Englishand Uyghur?

 

1.4 The Structure of the Thesis
This paper is divided into five chapters. Chapter one introduces backgroundinformation, research methodology, significance and objectives of this thesis. Inchapter two, literature review is given. Chapter three introduces “The ConceptualMetaphor Theory” in respect of cognitive functions, cognitive nature and workingmechanism. In chapter four, findings are mainly discussed. Finally, a conclusion hasbeen drawn in chapter five.
