Chapter 1 Introduction

Humor is a universal phenomenon. It is "an element of most humancommunication" (Palmer, 1994:1). It is commonly embodied in newspapers, magazines, literature, advertisements, TV series, films, etc. and it plays a veryimportant role in our daily life. Not only does humor serve to ameliorate interpersonalrelations, but also it enlivens the communicative atmosphere. Moreover, humor marksout its user as a man with quick wit, sound mind and good taste. In a word, humor isomnipresent in almost any language and culture and it works in society as a lubricant,a strategical and generally desirable way of communication (Fang Chuanyu,2010:1).For centuries, humor has aroused the interest of scholars, writers, comedians andaverage people owing to its ubiquity and popularity in social interaction. Overthousands of years, humor has been extensively studied from various fields, such asfrom philosophy, aesthetics, anthropology, sociology and psychology. Despite a longhistory of humor practice and all of the efforts devoted to humor research, thus atremendous literature, it is yet not safe to conclude that we have had a panoramic andclear picture of humor. There is even no consensus on what humor is. This is notaltogether surprising, however, since humor is indeed a very complex phenomenon.Besides, researchers' approaches to humor vary. All these approaches contribute moreor less to our better understanding and hopefully, better practice of humor. Recently, humor has come within the scope of linguistics. This is understandable because anyjoke (and other humorous genres included), by the nature of its verbalization,ihttps://www.51lunwen.org/yywxlw/org201211062113475396.htmlnevitably plays on language regardless of the fact that it involves a pun or not (XuLixin, 2003: 2). The present study, which takes American sitcom Friends as a caseto analyze its verbal humor from the perspective of Cooperative Principle, will becarried out with the expectation of contributing something to humor research as wellas to humor practice and understanding.

1.1 Rationale of the Study
The reasons for trying to analyze verbal humor in American situation comedyFriends from the perspective of Cooperative Principle originate from the followingconsiderations:Firstly, as a pervasive phenomenon, humor has attracted the interest of scholarsfrom different fields. The late 1970s witnessed a linguistic turn in humor research andlinguistics occupied an important position among the leading humor researchers(Attardo 1997: 395). With the development of pragmatics, there has been a notablegrowth of pragmatic studies on humor. The Cooperative Principle put forward byGrice is an important component of pragmatics. Ever since Cooperative Principle(CP ) and its relevant maxims were formulated by Grice in 1975,a large number ofresearches have been carried out to illustrate how humor involves violation of CP. Fora long time, Grice,s CP has turned out to be an effective framework for the study ofverbal humor (Xiang Chengdong,2008: 100).Secondly, compared with canned jokes, conversational joking or spontaneoushumor has been much less studied (Fang Chuanyu,2010: 3 ) . As a popular genre oftelevision programming, humorous utterances feature largely in situation comedy.Among all the sitcoms, Friends stands out and enjoys great popularity all over theworld.
