ous humorous lines can be found in its script, providing sufficient datasource for the present study.Thirdly, as for researches on sitcom, up till now, most of them are still limitedwithin the field of art (Han Longkun 2007： 14). However, as we all know, withoutdialogues or conversations，a sitcom can not be acted out since these conversationsand dialogues are the natural embodiment of humor in it. So it is necessary to dealwith this form of oral humor within linguistic field. Some researches have been doneon Friends from different angles, namely, translation, arts, cross-culturalcommunication, foreign language teaching, etc. Few researches have been done inpragmatic field. Even within the framework of pragmatics, many studies are carriedout in light of Relevance Theory, Adaptation Theory, or a combination of two or threepragmatic theories. Only a few people studied Friends from the perspective of CP andtheir studies seem to be not thorough enough. The author of the study aims to fill inthe gap and do a more thorough research to find out how humorous effect is achievedby words in the famous sitcom Friends.

 

1.2 Objectives of the Study
Many different kinds of approaches to humor research have offered valuableinsights into humor. The current research, however, is not intended to study the natureof humor in general. Rather, the intended area of this research is a case study ofverbal humour in American sitcom Friends from the perspective of CP. As XiangChengdong quoted in his book: "the humor production is characterized as anintentional and regular violation of Grice's maxims, especially the maxim of qualityand relevance" (2008:100). The goal of this research is to test this statement and tofind out whether CP can be applied to the analysis of verbal humor in Friends. If not，then what kind of strategy the scriptwriters adopt to create so many humorous linesand finally achieve humorous effect.

 

1.3 methodology and Data Collection
The present study, methodologically speaking, is mainly a qualitative one withthe hypothesis that production of verbal humor in Friends is achieved by violatingGrice's CP and its four maxims.Verbal humor in Friends is the object of this study. Since Friends is a greatsitcom that runs 10 seasons and comprises 238 episodes, it is painstaking, if nottotally impossible, to analyze every single episode. It is then decided that all the 18episodes in the tenth season will be selected only as the sample for present study. Thedata will be collected from both of the transcribed version (downloaded from the website and video version (downloaded from the web sitehttps://lib.verycd.com/teleply) of this sitcom. By watching the video and analyzing thetranscript, each of the humorous utterance, as indicated by the canned laughter, willbe located and grouped according to the four maxims put forward by Grice.

 

1.4 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis consists of six chapters that proceed in the following way.Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to present study.
