1.5 Research Methods
Based on the Cohesive Theory, the author will adopt qualitative analysis andquantitative analysis, when she makes the contrastive analysis on The Old Man andthe Sea and Hai Guan’s translation. Qualitative analysis and quantitative analysisare normally used in chemistry. Qualitative analysis is used to identify or classifysubstances by the chemical or physical properties of the substances, for instancechemical reactivity, melting point, solubility, mass spectra, nuclear half-life, and soon. Quantitative analysis is used to analyze the amount or concentration of theobject. During the research, qualitative analysis may take place withoutquantitative analysis, while quantitative analysis demands the identification of theobject for which the numerical estimates are given. In this thesis, qualitativeanalysis will be used in Chapter Ⅲ to analyze the cohesive devices in theThe OldMan and the Sea and Hai Guan’s translation. And then the author uses quantitativeanalysis to count the frequency of the different cohesive devices in the texts.statistics and case study also appear in this paper. In case study, Chinese examplescome from Hai Guan’s translation and English ones from Hemingway’s work.

　　This paper made a comparative study on cohesive devices in The Old Man andthe Sea and Hai Guan’s translation, and qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis,statistics and case study have been adapted to the study. On one hand, the authorfound the differences of cohesive devices and their strength between English andChinese texts. On the other hand, based on the results, the author explored whyChinese and English have so many differences on the cohesive devices. Englishprefers to use third personal pronouns, Chinese inclines to ellipsis and reiteration.
