摘要:As we have described in the introduction, the thesis aims at applying Halliday‘s thematic theory to aquantitative and qualitative study of similarities and differences between English and Chinese abstracts inthe adoption of theme and thematic progression patterns.
1.2 Research Aims
Halliday (1985) identifies several features combined to make up the textual component in thegrammar of English, seeing as following:A) StructuralThis thesis focuses on the thematic structure. By getting a thorough understanding of TP patterns, wecan find a clue of how sentences are put well together to make a coherent discourse and decode the text inan effective way (Huang Guowen, 1988). Therefore, it deals with how to realize a coherent discourse inorder to understand text better, and the data from authority linguistic research papers at home and abroadare gathered from September 1, 2000, to September 1, 2010. The thesis, trying to make a contrastiveanalysis for TP patterns adopted in the linguistic research article in English and Chinese, pays a lotattention to the similarities and differences between two different language systems and furthers to explainthe reason of the result.1. Informational structure Textual FunctionB) CohesiveHence, the three following research questions are of major significance:1) What are the characteristics of the theme choice in English abstracts and Chinese abstractsrespectively?2) What are the characteristics of the thematic progression patterns in English and Chinese abstracts?Are there having similarities and differences between them in terms of thematic progression patterns?3) What kind of factors would possibly influence theme choice and thematic progression patterns bothin English and Chinese abstracts?
1.3 Significance of the Study
This thesis is designed to make a contrastive analysis of thematic progression patterns in English andChinese abstracts of research articles. It is expected to be significant in both theoretical and practical sense.First, thematic progression (TP) theory is employed into the research. Most of the current studies inthe area of abstracts have been conducted in terms of macro-structure of the research article by applyingSwales‘model of genre analysis (Bhatia, 1993; Hyland, 2000). Just a few of the researches were carried outfrom the perspective of the thematic structure (Gosden, 1993; Martinez, 2003). Thus, thematic progression(TP) theory indicates the relationship between themes and rhemes of different sentences in hierarchy of atext. It is the best way to analyze the microstructure of a text. Through the analysis of the structure in thetext, we can find whether or not it is full in structure and coherent in content. By getting a thoroughunderstanding of TP patterns, we can find a clue of how sentences are put well together to make a coherentdiscourse and decode the text in an effective way (Huang Guowen, 1988).Second, the present analysis focuses on the contrastive study of thematic progression structure ofEnglish and Chinese which is enjoyed little attention before. It is a systematic study to identify thestructural differences and similarities in the paired English and Chinese counterpart.
