随着语言学与科学技术的日益发展,科技英语越来越多地吸引研究者的关注。次技术词作为科技英语中特殊的语言现象,相比通用英语与其他文体,具有其自身特点,因而也成为了科技英语学习及教学中的难点。本文主要着眼于科技英语次技术词的词义特征及搭配特点展开研究。
Chapter 1  Introduction
1.1   Research Background
    Linguistically, word is the "minimal free form" (Leonard Bloomfield, 1926) that can be used in isolation with semantic or pragmatic content. As an essential part of language, it is crucial for language learners to understand their meanings. What's more, they should know how to use a particular word in a specific context. Words take on different features or functions in different registers or fields. Moreover, a word may have multi-facet performances when used in various cotexts. That means despite the helpfulness of learning more words, people should know how to use a right word in a right place.
Nowadays, with the linguistic enrichment from science and technology, English for Science and Technology (henceforce EST) has summoned many researchers"academic efforts. Given its great benefit for the EST learning and teaching, thesemi-technical words in EST, as one of the indicators of the EST genre, is becomingmore and more worthwhile for the linguistic investigation. Therefore, the study ofsemi-technical words in EST is not only a lexicon-specific, but a genre-specific atlarge, and even more generally, a multi一field research.
    However, the previous researches on the semi-technical words were mainly concerned with their identification and definition. Though several studies employed relative corpora, which were based on modern computer technology to process tens of thousands of natural words at a time, undertaking the quantitative taskr most of them just engage themselves with the words" frequency ranks and little work has been done about  the  in-depth  investigation  on  semi-technical  words'  semantic  meaning, collocational pattern and their pedagogical implication.
