Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
With the transformation of new curriculum concepts in China,on the one hand,English teaching in China is increasingly emphasizing the application of variousteaching methods,the integration of teaching materials,and the improvement ofeducators’own teaching level and teaching ability.On the other hand,China hasstrengthened the autonomy of learners in English teaching,especially in enablingstudents to master appropriate learning strategies that suit them,cultivate theirawareness of self-directed learning,and improve their English learning abilities.This isbecause to some extent,helping students find suitable learning strategies and optimizingtheir learning strategies has become one of the teaching priorities.
The Chinese Ministry of Education’s General High School English CurriculumStandards(2017 Edition,Revised in 2022)has made clear requirements for the learningof English prepositional phrases.Based on learning 1500-1600 words in compulsoryeducation,students should learn to use about 500 new words and a certain number ofphrases,and accumulate mastery of 2000-2100 words.
Mastering prepositional phrases proficiently is of great significance for senior highschool students.Prepositional phrases mainly consist of a preposition and an object,such as“at sea”,“in depth”,and“in conclusion”.English Prepositional phrases havetheir unique grammatical features,and there is still insufficient research on prepositionalphrases in current researches.
1.2 Research Purpose and Significance
1.2.1 Research Purpose
This study explores whether elaboration strategies are helpful for senior highschool students in acquiring English prepositional phrases.Specifically,whethertraining students to use elaboration strategies can improve their performance in learningEnglish prepositional phrases,and whether it can truly enhance their ability to learnEnglish prepositional phrases and use English prepositional phrases.
1.2.2 Research Significance
(1)Theoretical Significance
It is based on the research of previous scholars,making the research more in-depth,especially in the application of research in senior high school teaching.Emphasize theimportance of elaboration strategies in senior high school students’learning,aselaboration strategies have significant value in senior high school English learning.Furthermore,the research has made some contributions to the integration of elaborationstrategies into English prepositional phrase learning,or English learning.
(2)Practical Significance
Enhance the enthusiasm of senior high school students to learn English,increasetheir interest in learning English,improve their learning efficiency of Englishprepositional phrases,and finally promote their improvement in English grades.Bychanging the form of rote memorization and phrases in the past,the burden of learningEnglish for senior high school students has been reduced,allowing them to learn English through methods and learning happily,thereby increasing their enthusiasm forlearning English.
