5.1.1 Distribution of Thinking Skills in Reading Exercises of Textbooks

The analysis unit of the reading exercises in the required selective textbooks for highschools 1-4 by People's Education Press includes 172 exercises.According to the results ofthe research tools used in this thesis,there were 120 observations and comparisons in terms ofthe observation and comparison of thinking quality,126 instances of analysis and inference,50 instances of induction and construction,and 44 instances of criticalness and innovation.Bytaking the total number of analysis units as the denominator and the frequency of presentationof each thinking skill as the numerator,the proportion of each aspect of thinking quality in thereading exercises was calculated.Then,using the proportion of each aspect of thinking qualityas the ordinate and the four aspects of thinking quality as the abscissa,the presentation statusof each aspect of thinking quality in the reading exercises was analyzed.

From the table 5.1,it shows that the analysis and inference of thinking quality in readingexercises of English PEP textbooks for high schools accounts for 73.26%.This indicates thatthe required selective textbooks emphasize the cultivation of students'reading and thinkingskills,moving away from a'transmission'approach to reading towards a'self-directed'one.By emphasizing the use of ability to actively observe and compare,students are encouraged todiscover the connections and differences between the information they receive and to deducethe logical relationships behind them.This is particularly relevant to the high school Englishcurriculum,which places a strong emphasis on the ability to analyze and interpret complextexts according to the information students had from the reading material.

6.1 Major Findings
