摘要:本文认为,作为功能翻译学派的核心理论,目的论打破了译界长久以来传统的“对等”要求,将翻译的目的作为首要考虑因素,重视译文预期功能的实现,对应用类文本,特别是旅游外宣文本的翻译,具有非常行之有效的指导意义。

equate translationand enable the text to function as it is expected to. This chapter includes an analysis ofthe translation of tourist publicity texts in light of the skopos theory. The translationbrief of tourist publicity texts will be defined first in order to provide some guidanceto the translators in the translation process; then, the author attempts to classify touristpublicity texts into three types based on the contents, and suggest some translationtechniques with examples to the translation of tourist publicity texts of each type fromthe perspective of skopos theory.


4.1 Translation Brief of Tourist Publicity Texts旅游外宣文本翻译简介

In view of the skopos theory, the skopos, i.e. the communicative purpose oftarget text, determines the whole translation process; and a translation brief should bedefined before the translation actually starts so as to make sure that the translated textis in accordance with its expected purpose. Definition of Translation BriefIn plain words, a translation brief refers to a set of instruction given by thetranslator himself/herself or someone else which describes how the text will be usedin order to carry out an assigned translational action. In the skopos theory, it plays avery important role and is highlighted by Reiss. It should be the first step in atranslation process. Considering its significance to the translators, a translation briefThe prospective time and place of text reception: the addressees may read thetexts before, during or after their visit in China, but mostly during their journey in thetourist attractions when reading tourist brochures or introduction to the touristattractions.The medium over which the text will be transmitted: the texts, both in sourcelanguage and target language, are transmitted mainly through tourist brochures,guidebooks or on-site introduction to the tourist attractions.The motive for the production or reception of the text: the texts aim at providingthe tourists with detailed introduction and descriptions about the tourist attractionsthrough tourist brochures or websites in order to publicize the Chinese culture,improve national images and boost the economic development. High-qualitytranslation must be provided to achieve this goal.On the basis of the above general translation brief for the translation of touristpublicity texts, it could be inferred that an adequate translated text should meet somebasic requirements. First, it is essential that the translator take target readers’ culturalbackgrounds and knowledge along with their resultant psychological expectations intoconsideration, so that the target text can be acceptable and comprehendible to thetarget readers. Secondly, to achieve the intended text functions, the translated textmust follow appropriate text type and writing style and use proper ways of expression.Last but not least, information about the tourist attractions shall take precedence overother information, since it is the top concern for both tourists and potential tourists.


4.2 Suggested Translation Strategies for Tourist Publicity Texts旅游外宣文本翻译策略建议

In the view of the skopos theory, a successful translation is adequate instead ofequivalent to the source text, which leads to a freer choice of translation strategies andmethods for the translators.
