Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Project Background

With the rapid development of globalization and the internet, more and more English documentaries are being introduced to China, which can present real images and tell real stories to the Chinese audiences, entertaining and educating them at the same time. The last decade has seen a rapid growth in military documentaries in English, with a large number of high-quality documentaries that are sought after by audiences. However, due to the huge differences between the Chinese and western languages, cultures, ways of thinking and expression, most Chinese audiences encounter great barriers in understanding documentaries. In order to understand the content of the military documentaries more thoroughly and accurately comprehend the cultures they carry, they have to resort to subtitle translation. As a result, the demand for high-quality subtitle translation in this area is increasingly growing. 

In recent decade, research in this area is receiving increasing attention from the academic community, with an increasingly wide range of studies and the emergence of many new research perspectives. However, there is a serious lack of professional documentary subtitle translators. These translators have not undergone systematic translation training, and most of them lack systematic knowledge of English documentary subtitle translation, so the translated works are of varying quality, while the audience needs systematic, professional, standardized and accurate subtitle translation. This contradiction between the current situation and demand has prompted us to conduct more in-depth and professional research and extensive practice on subtitle translation of military documentaries, so as to better meet the needs of the audiences and make military documentaries a bridge for cultural dissemination and communication. 

1.2 Project Significance

China boasts the largest number of television audiences and internet users in the world, and more and more Chinese audiences have access to excellent English military documentaries. The project is beneficial for Chinese audiences to learn more about military knowledge, culture and history abroad. It plays a crucial role in improving the quality of subtitle translation in English military documentaries, so as to effectively help the target audiences understand them and promote cultural exchanges. 

A large number of subtitle translations of military documentaries have appeared in various media, but the overall quality of the translations has yet to be improved. There are a small number of subtitle translations of military documentaries, so there is still much room for practice. This thesis strives to make a breakthrough in the subtitle translation practice of military documentaries and improve the quality of military documentary translation.
