e saw Scobie take Yusef home in his police car. During the war, the Syrian businessman Yusef made a big fortune by smuggling diamonds illegally. If a police is seen to have private dealings with him, which means the policeman violated wartime laws, accepted bribes and participated in illegal smuggling. Faced with this hint, the priest firmly denied it. He said “if it was Scobie, I wouldn’t think twice about it, not twice. I’d lay next Sunday’s collection that everything was all right, absolutely all right” (Greene, 2019: 59). The priest’s words showed his firm acknowledgement of Scobie’s morality. It is Scobie’s morality that causes him to be ostracized by other colonists.

Chapter Two  The Catalyst of Scobie’s Death: Caught in Dilemma

2.1 Committing Adultery Caused by Trauma

As David Lodge points out “By the time Louise leaves, the stage is set for Scobie’s tragedy, the fall of a good man” (Lodge, 1966: 29). After his wife left, Scobie enjoyed a brief sense of tranquility. However, Helen’s appearance shattered the hard-won tranquility. Helen was a nineteen-year-old widow who came here because of the shipwreck. Scobie committed adultery during his days with Helen. As a devout Catholic, why did Scobie commit such a big sin while he knew clearly the sin was unforgivable? In fact, Scobie’s adultery was not accidental but inevitable, just as Philip Stratford says “Helen is Scobie’s destiny” (Stratford, 1964: 56). He depicts the first scene when Scobie meets Helen as “Scobie, in a key scene stands peering into Vichy France and sees his destiny carried him on a stretcher across a boundary river” (Stratford, 1964: 56). The unavoidable destiny of Scobie caused by adultery can be analyzed from two angles: his awful marriage and his pity evoked by the trauma of losing his beloved daughter.

The phenomenon of adultery appears more and more frequently in the literature works in the late nineteenth century. Though the reason of “Why the literary characters of the latter half of the nineteenth century entered into adulterous relationships are variable-while the components of the infamous triangle–husband, wife and lover-remain the same” (Armstrong, 1976: 57). Whether a person has an inclination to commit adultery has a lot to do with his marital condition. As Armstrong pinpoints “The quality of his marriage is intimately bound up with the degree of his inclination” (Armstrong, 1976: 57). It can be clearly deduced that marriage is a main element in the analysis of the causes of adultery. He even affirms his view by articulating that “any of the husbands are driven to adultery by a nagging wife or an intolerable domestic situation” (Armstrong, 1976: 58). Based on Armstrong’s view, it is reasonable for us to analyze the reason of Scobie’s adultery from his marital situation.

2.2 Committing Murder Caused by Racism

However, fate does not allow Scobie to stop his step into downfall. He goes further into the ranks of criminals catalyzed by moral depravity. He always thinks his affair with Helen is a seamless secret because he is very cautious every time he meets Helen. To ensure the safety, he chooses to leave Helen’s house before dawn. The night seems to give him an illusion of safety and reliability. However, it is just a fantasy to throw a blanket of his secrecy within this place that is full of the eyes of gaze. What he considers a pe论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
