ur  country  has  followed  the  same  path  for  a  long  time.  It  is basically  three  major  teaching  elements:  pronunciation,  vocabulary  and  grammar,  which  is also the traditional pattern of English teaching in our country. As a single part in traditional teaching, pronunciation plays a vital role.     Pronunciation  is  the  foundation  of  oral  communication  and  also  the  starting  point  of language  teaching.  A.C.  Gimson  was  a  phonetician  known  throughout  the  world  for  his works  on  English  pronunciation.  He  became  Professor  of  Phonetics  at  University  College London in 1966, and from 1971 until his retirement in 1983 he was Head of the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics. Gimson once made a precise statement about the significance of pronunciation. To speak any language, one has to possess only 50-90% of its grammar and 1% of  its  vocabulary,  but  the  phonetic  knowledge  has  to  be  100%  mastered.  (cited  in  Chen Yongli, 1996) Having a better knowledge of pronunciation is not only for the need of social communication, but also a solid foundation to learn English well. On  the  perspective  of  linguistics,  pronunciation  is  divided  into  two  major  parts: phonetics  and  phonology.  Phonetics  focuses  on  the  preciseness  and  correctness  of  each individual  sound.  It  relies  on  the  standard  pronunciation  to  make  one  announce  himself  or herself clearly. Phonology, to a greater extent, combines each sound together as an integrated group, reflecting the patterns and routes of pronunciation, such as intonation, stress, phonetic structure, et cetera.
