Chapter 5 The Role of (Re-) narrators in the Translation of “Island Disputes” News 

(Re-)  narrators  in  part  5.1  refer  to  translators  as  they  re-narrate  what  English news journalists say and represent in part 5.2 as translation scholars for when they are studying  the  island  dispute-related  news  translation,  they  essentially  provide  yet another interpretation to the events and revalue the original news again. At the same time, both translations and research results are narratives, which reflect (re-)narrators ‘viewpoints, their standing, and their emotional inclination. 

5.1Translators as (re-) narrators 

There  is  an  in-built  tension  between  on  the  one  hand  the  responsibility  for individual  translators  to  translate  texts  faithfully  and  the  other,  the  resistance  and opposition that a translator needs when he/she is faced with narratives different from or opposite to theirs.  This  responsibility  with  translators,  or  the  elixir  of  translation  activity,  remains the  same—translating  faithfully.  This  faithfulness  is  more  powerfully  to  do  with readers. And at the very least, the textual aim of translators is to make readers who do not  master  another  language  understand  the  basic  content  and  ideas  of  original  text through his or her translation. (Cao Minglun, 2013:127) In  other  words,  linguistic  equivalence  is  primarily  a  promise  translators  must make  good.  This  responsibility  is  hard  to  shaken  no  matter  they  are  literary  texts  or non-literary ones. The visibility of translators cannot become an excuse for betraying the original text. Translations about island disputes in English Digest haven’t showed direct or apparent intervention or large chunks of unfaithful parts. More importantly, there’s  a  fair  bit  of  evidence  showing  translators  in  English  Digest  make  use  of  this visibility to fulfill the responsibility towards their readers as translators by making the text more understandable to them.
