As evidenced in Susan Bassnett’s classification  of  TS  as  History  of  Translation,  Translation  in  the  Tl  culture,  and Translation  &  Poetics,  as  well  as  Translation  and  Linguistics,  only  the  last  of  which includes “the translation problems of non-literary texts”. (Bassnett, 2002/2010:16-17) Scholars  such  as  Robinson(1997),  Lefevere(2010),  Toury(1995/2001),  among  other people,  ferret  through  literary  works  to  make  their  point,  although  they  all  respect translators’  status  and  highlighting  political,  ideological  and  cultural  facets  in  their research.  It’s  almost  as  if  only  literary  translations  could  best  reflect  those  elements while non-literary texts can’t.

1.2Research scope
The  literature  covers  on  news  and  their  translations  about  island  disputes  in South  China  Sea  and  their  following  repercussions  and  consequences.  18  pieces  of news  and  translations  all  come  from  English  Digest,  a  monthly  bilingual  magazine. More specifically, the bilingual news is from its two columns, namely ‘current affairs’ and  ‘focus  on  China’,  which  deals  with  political  and  international  issues  of  late. Although  political  news  translations  are  the  major  research  object,  other  non-verbal content  in  the  articles  is  also  worth  proper  investigation  and  to  see  the  wholesome  impact these elements has on the readers.Instead  of  testing  translation  phenomena  against  the  insights  offered  by  some theory  in  Translation  Studies,  this  thesis  begins  with  the  phenomena  and  tries  to explain  and  interpret  these  phenomena  and  the  reason  behind  them  in  an  adequate perspective. The  research  questions  are  as  follows:  first  how  the  island  disputes-related translations  are  re-narrated  in  English  Digest.  And  is  there  any  use  of  these re-narrations,  if  there  is  any,  to  the  readers  and  the  larger  community,  apart  from  its studying  use  and  what  role  Chinese  translators  play  in  this  process.  Second,  does impartiality  really  like  a  “holy  grail”  that  translators  and  translation  scholars  alike must hold?
