Chapter One INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) was one of the leading novelists in the twentiethcentury. She was born and brought up in a family of middle class in Wellington, NewZealand. Her father was a successful businessman and banker in local society, and hermother a typical and well-educated Victorian housewife. As the third child in thefamily, Mansfield spent her blissfully carefree childhood with the comfortable andprivileged life in the countryside, which was the key stage of the formation anddevelopment of her personality and had a great impact on her works. In 1903, Mansfield was sent to Queen’s College in London along with her eldersisters. After three years’ study, the three sisters returned their home. In 1908,Mansfield made a decision to get back to London after a bitter quarrel with her father. At that time, she was also determined to escape from the constraints of her family andbreak the social restrictions on women in her own way. It was also at that time she wasobsessed with literary creation and started to establish herself as a writer. At the verybeginning of her writing career, Mansfield lived a hard and rough life. Even worse, shebegan to suffer from her poor health in the rest of her life.In 1911, she published her first collection of short stories, In a German Pension, which aroused public attention immediately. In 1912, she met critic and editor JohnMiddleton Murry, who had actually published several of her works. They fell in lovewith each other shortly after their encounter, and then Mansfield was invited to assisthim in the editing of literary journals Rhythm and The Blue Review. During that period,Murry had a great influence on her creative writing and became the mentor on herworks. To a certain degree, she gained access to the mainstream of literary circlesthrough Murry at that time. In 1915, Mansfield’s brother was killed in the First WorldWar as a soldier, which affected her deeply and aggravated her health condition. For along time, she drowned herself into the grief deliberately and desperately.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
Owing to her ingenious and brilliant narrative strategies, Katherine Mansfield hasmade an outstanding contribution to the development of European modernist shortstories, which is as prominent as those of Antony Chekhov, James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway. The narrative techniques adopted in her stories subtly serve the themesand thus make her works unique and distinct in readers’ mind. This
thesis considersthat the success of Mansfield’s short stories mainly lies in her adoption of modernistnarrative techniques, particularly narrative voice. The majority of existing
literature reviews on her works at home and abroad focuson various aspects, such as the study of biographical criticism, text explanation, stylistic research, feminism, symbolism, psychological analysis, etc. But there are fewstudies to analyze its discourse from the perspective of Narrative Voice.Since feminist narratology and its related theories share more and more concerns inrecent decades, this thesis endeavors to analyze Katherine Mansfield’s short stories inaccordance with Susan S. Lanser’s Narrative Voice Theory in order to analyze theemotional factors of narrative voices in Katherine Mansfield’s fiction and explore howthe narrative voices help readers obtain the emotional resonance while reading andcomprehending th
