2.1 Intrinsic Textual Analysis Based on Plot

2.1.1 Weakening the Temperament of the Fierce Woman

In the history of modern Chinese literature, Lao She has created many rich and immortal female images with his unique perspective. In the literary world he constructed, there are not only gentle and kind women, but also ugly and brutal women, such as the “Huniu” in Rickshaw Boy, and the Big Red Pepper in Si Shi Tong Tang. Big Red Pepper has an ugly appearance, and is also arrogant and domineering, fierce and cruel. She has supremacy in the family, and no one dares to oppose her. She “loves” her husband, but this love comes with strong possession and domineering. She trades her daughter’s marriage in exchange for her prosperity. She is even more ruthless, merciless towards her husband’s concubine, and even wants to send her to a brothel to be imprisoned forever. She is also arrogant to the neighbors of the little sheep fold. When Little Tsui refuses to give Kuan the Morning Lotus a ride, Big Red Pepper directly slaps him. And for her own sake, she encourages Kuan the Morning Lotus to report their neighbor, and the Chien family is destroyed. 

However, Lao She deleted a part of the plot showing her fierceness and domineering in the manuscript. This is shown in the following examples. 

Ex.1大赤包,桐芳,高第的三张嘴一齐活动,谁也听不清谁的话,而都尽力的发出声音,像林中的群鸟只管自己啼唤,不顾得听取别人的意见那样。她们渐渐的失去了争吵的中心,改为随心所欲的诟骂,于是她们就只须把毒狠而污秽的字随便的编串到一块,而无须顾及文法和修辞。这样,她们心中和口中都感到爽快,而越骂越高兴。她们的心中开了闸,把平日积聚下的污垢一下子倾泻出来。 (老舍, 1998:184) 

2.2 Extrinsic Textual Analysis

2.2.1 The Needs for Promoting National Image

A positive national image can attract capital and win foreign aid for the country, and the construction of the national image is naturally inseparable from translation. As “a field that is constantly subject to invasion and interference from neighboring fields” (Simeoni, 1998:24), the translation field is naturally subject to the intervention of the political field and is constantly politicized. As a result, various war-themed literary works appeared in the field of translation in the forties. In this context, the Chinese translator community has also joined the competition. For example, Xiao (1937) once called on friends who are good at foreign languages to undertake international propaganda work. Lin Yutang also frequently publicized the Chinese War of Resistance in the United States. And after the end of World War II, the world political pattern was reshuffled. Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union, as great powers at that time, were about to open the prelude of the Cold War. Because of its important role in the world war of World War II, China became an important weight for balancing international forces and became the object of contention between Britain and the United States and the Soviet Union. To be sure, these countries wanted to know about China more than ever at this time (Xu, 2018). For China, a positive national image after World War II will determine China’s international status after the end of World War II. Therefore, subverting the negative image of China is the innate mission of translators. This mission is very important and necessary in the special world situation of the forties (Xu, 2018).
