Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Objectives of the Research

Alzheimer’s disease(abbreviated as AD),the most common age-relatedneurodegenerative disease,is characterized by an irreversible and progressivecognitive decline(McKhann et al.,2011;Toledo et al.,2018;Ota et al.,2020;Zhanget al.,2020).As the disease deteriorates,the individuals will have more trouble withmemory,speaking,and even acting.A report published by China National CommitteeOn Aging shows that there are about 15.07 million dementia patients among theelderly aged 60 and over in China,and the number is expected to reach 22.2 million in2030 and 28.98 million in 2050.AD is the most common kind of dementia and one ofthe significant diseases endangering the health of the elderly.As a result,the earlydetection and diagnosis of AD are of great significance.

Language,as one of the most complex aspects of human cognition,is arepresentation of cognitive activities(Christiansen,&Charter,2008;Perlovsky,&Sakai,2014).The discourse we utter or write can reveal who we are and how we think,and in turn,the damage brought about by AD is supposed to hide in the language(Pennebaker,2017;Liu et al.,2019).Therefore,the unique features of languageexpressions of probable AD patients can serve as an indicator and predictor of AD.For example,among the 24 evaluation items in the Mental Status Examination(MSE)(Weiner,&Lipton,2003),there are ten items directly evaluating the language use ofpatients,such as repetition and naming.Furthermore,four items are closely related tolanguages,such as memory and cognitive function(Gu,2019).

1.2 Significance of the Research

The language function of AD patients has become an essential focus ininternational research on clinical linguistics(Liu,2017).AD will have an impact notonly on cognitive and executive function but also on language function(Waldemar&Burns,2017;Zhao et al.,2016).In addition,language is a significant part of human’scognitive function.As an advanced cognitive activity,producing language involves aseries of complex cognitive processes.As a result,the damage to the brain broughtabout by AD will show in the language used by AD patients.In turn,the impairmentsin language function can reveal the cognitive state of AD patients,such as episodememory,mental development,sentiment,and social activities(Liu,2017).

Verbs hold a significant role in people’s communication.Moreover,researchersfrom different countries acknowledge verbs’essential function,putting forward theverb core theory.The primary view of dependency grammar also claims that the verbsare the center of a sentence.This study adopts syntactic dependency treebanks basedon dependency grammar to study the verb valency of Chinese-speaking AD patients,HPs and their English-speaking counterparts.On the one hand,dependency grammaris an integral part of cognitive linguistics which is helpful for researchers to dive into the cognitive process of AD patients.On the other,drawing on syntactic dependencytreebanks,the characteristics of the verb valency in the discourse can be revealed in aquantitative way.In this way,the characteristics of the verbs produced by AD patientscan be understood more clearly.The s本论文由英语论文网提供整理，提供论文代写，英语论文代写，代写论文，代写英语论文，代写留学生论文，代写英文论文，留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
