Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Since its introduction more than three decades ago, the acquisition of Chinese as a second language (CSL) has received widespread attention from researchers in the fields of second language acquisition (SLA) and Chinese education (Shi, 2006; Wen, 2020). In particular, the examination of acquisition orders and developmental sequences has emerged as a prevalent topic in current research on CSL (Shi, 2006). The acquisition of Chinese morphosyntax, as a stage in developmental sequences, has been extensively researched, “especially in the interfaces between morphology, syntax, and semantics” (Zhao, 2011, p. 559). The exhaustivity of cleft sentences, which serves as an interface between syntax and semantics or a syntax-discourse interface in some studies, has generated much interest in first and second language acquisition (Destruel & Donaldson, 2017; Destruel, 2022; Hsu, 2019; Liu, 2020).
The investigation of error analysis and teaching design on Mandarin shi-cleft has garnered significant attention within the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (TCSOL). However, the L2 examination of exhaustivity associated with shi-cleft remains a relatively unexplored area within the existing literature. To our best knowledge, previous research has scrutinized the acquisition of exhaustivity with Mandarin shi-cleft and other related constructions by native speakers of Cambodian and Thai languages.
1.2 Purpose of the Study
The primary aim of this research is to examine the interpretation and processing of exhaustivity associated with Mandarin shi-clefts among L2 learners with different levels of proficiency. This investigation will employ a trichotomous-response design in two experiments, namely a forced-choice task and a self-paced reading task.
Firstly, the forced-choice task will be conducted to explore whether sentence type significantly influences the interpretation of exhaustivity. Specifically, we will examine the strength of exhaustive effects associated with overt contradiction no, weak denial yes, but, and agreement yes, and (Onea & Beaver, 2011).
Secondly, the study aims to compare the inferential patterns and processing efforts of L2 learners with those of native Chinese speakers, with a particular focus on the shi-clefts. Previous research has indicated that L2 Chinese learners only can acquire exhaustivity in exclusives (Liu, 2020; Teng, 2022). Consequently, this study will provide empirical evidence regarding the inferential patterns of L2 speakers.
Thirdly, the research seeks to differentiate the inferential patterns and processing efforts of exhaustivity between L2 learners with high- and low-proficiency levels. Consistent with the IH, it has been proposed that external interfaces or cognitive domains may lead to “residual optionality or other manifestations of nonnativeness” (Destruel & Donaldson, 2017, p. 710). By employing the online and offline tasks, we will be able to distinguish between two proficiency groups within the framework of IH.
