After building the syntactic dependency treebanks,counted are the distributionof the valency types that appeared in the discourse of Chinese-speaking AD patientsand HPs(The explanation and examples of the valency types are shown in theAppendix).There are 2611 valency types related to the verbs used by the AD groupand 2969 in the HP group.The general statistics of the distribution of the valencytypes of the verbs used by the Chinese-speaking AD group and HP group are shown inTable 3 and Table 4.The frequencies are ranked from the most frequently used to theleast so that the preference of the valency types of the verbs in the two groups can beseen clearly.The tables suggest that there are 29 kinds of valency types of verbs in theChinese-speaking AD group and 32 in the Chinese-speaking HP group.

5.1 Major Findings

This study has investigated the verb valency of Chinese-speaking andEnglish-speaking AD patients based on syntactic dependency treebanks from theperspective of dependency grammar.The research on verb valency is developed fromthree research focuses:the valency types of the verbs,the probabilistic valencypatterns of the verbs,and the valency properties from a syntactic dependency networkperspective.All these three research points of Chinese-speaking and English-speakingAD patients are compared in reference with their HPs,respectively.This thesis yieldsseveral substantive findings which may provide several significant implications forthe study of AD.

First,the results show that there exists significant difference in the valency typesof the verbs between the Chinese-speaking AD group and the HP group.TheChinese-speaking AD patients use more pronouns as nominal subjects than the HPs,although they produce more nominal subjects than the HPs.In addition,Chinese-speaking AD patients use fewer dependency types that are used to modifierthe nouns,verbs and clauses,indicating the syntactic impairments of AD patients.Asfor the English-speaking AD group and HP group,the English-speaking AD patientstend to repeat words and produce some grammatically incorrect expressions.However,the AD patients use more adverbs than HPs,which requires more research.
