2.1.1 Residence where LaMotte Creates Literary Works

In the male-dominated society,women become the vulnerable group.The largeworld out there belongs to men,and women can only retreat into the private spacethey have created.LaMotte and her best friend Blanche live out their“ideal life”together and are self-sufficient.This way of life is also a survival culture.Culture isnot an illusory existence hanging high in the air.It is also part of a holistic way of life.In its own way,it also intersects with the real world.It is also a material process whenit acts on a person.It is like LaMotte’s living environment.In her dank seclusion toAsh,LaMotte describes her condition as an egg.Her first seclusion is in some ways alife of death.This static state is bound to be broken,leading either to new life or todeath.

2.2 Genre of Ash and LaMotte’s Literary Creation

Williams has three definitions of culture.One is the“documentary”definition,in which culture refers to the entity or text of an intellectual or imaginative work.

This definition of culture gives primacy to individual works(documents).Theelaboration and evaluation of these works and documents is regarded as the primaryobjective.And“the structure of feeling”refers to“the general feelings people haveabout real life at a particular period”(6).This feeling contains the common valuesand social psychology of the people at that times,and is reflected in the literature ofthe times.Ash and LaMotte were intellectuals.Their literary and artistic works arethe external reflection and expression of their inner feeling of real life.The workalso implies their personal real-life experiences and their values and worldviews.They belong to the livelier,more vivid,real content of society.This section focuseson Ash and LaMotte materialistic literary works to discuss their ideas of resistanceand the reconstruction of knowledge structure in resistance.

2.2.1 Bildungsroman

Although the structure of feeling exists in the living culture of society,when acertain social period becomes a historical period,the structure of feeling can no longerbe personally felt by later generations.However,this does not mean that they cannotunderstand and grasp the structure of feeling of the social historical period.They canstart with“documentary culture”to approach and experience the structure of feelingof a certain period.The documentary culture in the novel is mainly reflected in thecreation of the intellectuals Ash and LaMotte.
