In Afghanistan’s traditional society, men enjoy absolute sovereignty over women, while women receive almost no form of care from their families and society. Afghan women are often neglected, since little attention is given to their dreary and sinful lives other than by themselves. Faced with gender discrimination in every aspect of society, the power of the individual is often subjugated and disregarded because of its inherent constraints. The only way forward for Afghanistan is through a more pluralistic polity, where all Afghans, especially women and minorities. 

For Mariam, ending Rasheed’s life was an extreme means of confronting the patriarchy. Her success came not only from herself but also from her friend Laila. During her childhood, Mariam was in the hands of Jalil, a male patriarch of authority who was the first man to place his daughter in an oppressive position. Her mother, Nana, was a domestic servant in Jalil’s household, and she did not have a normal, loving family. Jalil felt shame for having a child with Nana and as a result, Nana and Mariam were abandoned in a poor village. Mariam and her mother Nana lost their voices because of Jalil’s hypocrisy and could not express their feelings and emotions. They were subalterns under Jalil’s regime of power. However, Jalil did not take on his responsibilities as a spouse or father, which was unfair to Mariam and Nana. What Mariam could do was be obedient to her father, and obedient to a patriarchal society. 

Chapter 5 Conclusion

A Thousand Splendid Suns presents us with two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, who come from different backgrounds but experience common hardships under the oppression of patriarchal society and hegemonic politics, thus revealing the issue of women’s survival. Hosseini shows his deep concern for the living environment of Afghan women, criticizes the patriarchal system that leads to women’s tragedy, and wants to arouse the world’s sympathy.
