Chapter 2 Oppression within Family
2.1 The Male-chauvinism of the Hero—Jalil
As Mariam’s father, Jalil is a prominent figure among the heroes portrayed in the novel. He is a symbolic figure of a patriarchal society. He exploited his authority to subject his wife and daughter to oppressive circumstances.
Jalil was regarded as one of the most affluent individuals in Herat. In Afghanistan, it is customary for men to exercise considerable authority, allowing them to have numerous wives. Jalil was legally married to three women and had nine children. Despite this, the individual engaged in a romantic relationship with Nana, the family's housekeeper. Upon discovering Nana's pregnancy, the wives expelled Nana from residing within the household where they had been accommodated. Jalil's wives’ opinion seemed important, but in reality, it was only because Jalil happened to agree with them. Jalil made a deliberate choice to deceive them at first, displaying indifference towards their emotions. Jalil did not hold much affection for his wives or Nana. Consequently, he accepted the wives' proposal, thus aligning with his mindset. Jalil and his sons constructed a kolba for Nana in a distant mountainous region. Due to Mariam's illegitimate status, Jalil could not furnish her with a conventional family. Consequently, he could only visit Mariam and her mother, Nana, on Thursdays. Consequently, she expressed her sentiments to her daughter by saying, “Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. You remember that, Mariam” (Hosseini 7).
2.2 The Male-chauvinism of the Hero—Rasheed
The secondary main character is Rasheed, Mariam's spouse, who is often opposed by Mariam because he embodies the forces representative of the dark side of the psyche and the common value in Afghanistan. Rasheed, being a member of Afghanistan's largest ethnic group, the Pashtuns. According to a 2021 book, “suffering or gham as the primary interpretive framework to understand the lives of Pashtun women.” (Ahsan-Tirmizi 73) This powerful ethic of forbearance severely limits the ability of traditional Pashtun women to avoid the constant suffering that a Pashtun woman had to undergo each and every day of her life. This suffering is attributed, once again, to Pashtun customs, but with the added onerousness that any means or methods that could liberate women from this life of misery, such as education, are also deemed shameful. (Safoora 288) Violence against women, or gender-based abuse, is one of the crucial social mechanisms in Afghanistan in which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men. He perceived a woman as a means for procreation, as a domestic aide capable of managing household tasks and cu本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
