translation, several linguistic approaches to the analysis of translation have put forth comprehensive lists or taxonomies since the 1950s (Munday & Pinto, 2022). Blackmore (1987) studied discourse markers in the framework of Relevance Theory, and pointed out that discourse connectives are used to prove how the relevance of discourse components is interdependent from the perspective of the influence of discourse markers on discourse relevance. Since Relevance Theory was put forward, E.A.Gutt, a student of Sperber and Wilson, took the lead in applying Relevance Theory to translation studies in his doctoral thesis Translation and Relevance: Cognition and Context in 1991. On the basis of Relevance Theory, he put forward that translation is a reasoning process and the object of translation studies is human brain mechanism (Gutt, 1991).

4.1 Lexical Level

A word is the most stable language unit in a language and the basic unit in texts (Hu, 2019). The first step in translating is the accurate comprehension and expression of word meaning. Sticking to the source text’s format or performing a mechanical translation word for word will make the translation cryptic and challenging for readers to understand. To capture the charm of the source text, the translator devotes close attention to finding the comparable phrase in the culture of the target language. 

4.1.1 Amplification

Amplification is to add some words to the target text in order to conform to the expression of the target language (Ye, 2020). The technique known as “amplification” involves adding words, phrases, or sentences to a translation in order to better convey the original text’s content while accounting for the disparities in English and Chinese linguistic idioms and ways of thinking. The first is to ensure the grammatical structure of the translation is complete, and the second is to ensure the translation meaning is clear. The followings are examples.

During the process of translation, there are instances where the importance of conveying the informational content outweighs the strict adherence to the original form of expression. In such cases, the translator has the flexibility to supplement the faithful meaning of the source text with appropriate additions that enhance the semantic understanding.
