Communicative translation theory is proposed by Peter Newmark,a famous Britishtranslator and translation theorist.He has been engaged in translation work for manyyears and has in-depth theoretical research and practical foundation on translation.ZhuZhiyu’s evaluation of him is that although Newmark himself is more traditional,hisunderstanding of translation is not bound.He is thorough in his thinking,most subtle inhis observations,and most thorough and profound in his interpretations.In addition to thetheory,he also puts forward very insightful views on the existing translation phenomenon,which helps the most in understanding the translation practice(Zhu,2017).

In the book of Approaches to Translation,Newmark puts forward the concepts ofcommunicative translation and semantic translation and makes a systematic and in-depthdiscussion of these two concepts,which can be regarded as his major contribution to thestudy of modern translation theory.From the perspective of the readers,Newmark statesin Approaches to Translation that communicative translation attempts to produce on itsreaders an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original(Newmark,2001:39).Semantic translation attempts to convey the contextual meaning ofthe source as accurately as the semantic and syntactic structure of the second languageallows.It follows the thought process rather than the intent of the source text.In addition,Newmark argues that most non-literary writing,journalism,informative articles andbooks,textbooks,reports,scientific and technological writing,publicity,etc.,need to usecommunicative translation theory according to the characteristics of the text types(Newmark,1977).

2.2 Application of Communicative Translation Theory

Peter Newmark’s translation theory is widely used in the translation practice.Hecombines numerous examples of translation theory with the practical application of translation.Newmark believes that communicative translation theory strives to producean effect on the readers that is as close as possible on the readers of the source text.Communicative translation theory has played an important role in the research anddevelopment of translation theory,and translators,experts,and translation-related peoplehave applied the theory to the translation practice(Bai,2020).
