Comprehension is the basis of translation, and correct comprehension is the only way to translate correctly. In the translation practice, incomprehension will lead to problems such as mistranslation and confusion of sentence structure. Meanwhile, comprehension is the necessary foundation for both “expression” and “adaptation”. Only by correctly understanding the original text can the information of the source text be grasped accurately, conveying the information of the source text while making the translation conform to the principle of fidelity. According to Newmark’s (1981) communicative translation theory, the importance of comprehension for translation can be elaborated with typical cases from three perspectives: words and phrases with business characteristics, sentence structure and background information.

Chapter Five Conclusion

This translation task was a challenge and a good exercise for the translator. The translator encountered a variety of problems while translating, and often honed and refined a single word or sentence. After completing the first draft of the translation, the translator then read through the source text and the translation several times, still gaining new comprehension each time and making repeated revisions and proofreading. The translator tried her best to make a bridge between the source language and the target language, and tried to convey the meaning of the source language to the greatest extent, but there were still some problems, such as translationese and a lack of thorough understanding of the source language, resulting in a lack of accurate translation in many places. Reflecting on this translation practice, the translator thinks that several problems which have not been dealt with such as the differences between the English and Chinese languages in terms of proper expression. In the future, it is necessary not only to work hard on English comprehension, but also to improve the expression of Chinese. Only by better mastering the mother tongue and enhancing the literary literacy can translators make his or her expressions more fluent and more in line with the meaning of the source text on the basis of comprehension. Finally, the translator believes that she still needs to deeply study translation theories. Practice needs the guidance of theories, and theories need to be tested in practice. The translator should read and understand translation theories more extensively and deeply, and use the theories to better guide the translation practice.
