" andits combinations in this thesis are as follows: First，the letter "A" appears first in thealphabet. Second, the letter “A” is a vowel letter, thus combinations with other letters arein abundance. Last, the previous studies mainly describe on the basis of phonetics. Thisthesis concentrates on the letter and letter combinations; therefore, it is a description from anew perspective. This research will be helpful to standardize the E-C transliterations ofcommon English names, contribute substantially to cross-cultural communication and shedlight on the teaching of E-C translation, which in turn will give a directional guide intranslation practice.

Chapter Two literature review

This chapter consists of two parts. The first part is theoretical background, giving thedefinitions of the key terms in this thesis. The second part presents literature review aboutE-C transliterations of common English names.

2.1 Theoretical Background

2.1.1 Definition of transliteration
Transliteration is defined as a process or action in which the sounds or forms of wordsin a source language are turned into forms of the target language. It is used when propernames, common personal names and some new terminologies are borrowed into anotherlanguage.According to Catford (1965)，Chao (1968)，Wang (1987), Pan (2000)，there are twokinds of transliteration-sound-oriented transliteration and form-oriented transliteration.Chen (1985) viewed the former as transliteration and the latter as transcription. Wang(1965) defined transcription as recording each letter's pronunciation rather than eachsyllable in the source language with corresponding Chinese characters. This is, however,not applicable to all cases according to previous studies.

Conclusion

It should be noted that this study suffers from a few limitations in the research design,thus the research findings yielded remain to be verified in further study.First, the data is not large enough and completely representative. This study onlyresearch transliterations of initial "A" and its combinations in 140 common English names.Combinations in the middle and the end of the names are not researched.
