famous Englishsatirical writer and political commentator in the eighteenth century. Gulliver’s Travelswas one of the first English classic novels that were introduced into China. It has beenrendered into dozens of types of translated versions since its publication, of which someare ironic and critical works, retaining the style and spirit of the source text, and othersare reading materials for children. However, because of the differences between thesource culture and the target culture, this novel has been considered as the children’sliterature for a long time in China. The version chosen for this study is a children’sliterature version of Gulliver’s Travels translated by Wang Weidong. From this versionwe can know that the purpose of the target text is changed, and the target reader isintended to children. Thus, the translation purpose is very obvious and the displaying ofthe translator’s subjectivity takes an important place in the translation process. Therefore, in this dissertation the Skopostheorie is chosen as the theoretical foundationto explore the translator’s subjectivity in the translation process, with a case study onWang Weidong’s version of Gulliver’s Travels, through which people can have aspecific understanding on the issue from the micro perspective.

  1.2 Research Purposes研究目的
This dissertation is expected to provide a new perspective to study the translator’ssubjectivity. Based on the theoretical framework of the Skopostheorie, the authorcompares the original text of Gulliver’s Travels with Wang Weidong’s Chinesetranslated version, and tries to answer two questions as following:(1) How is Wang Weidong’s subjectivity displayed to meet the requirement of thetranslation purpose?(2) In what way is his subjectivity restrained in the translation of Gulliver’sTravels?

  1.3 Methodology and Data数据方法
The analysis of this dissertation is conducted on a qualitative method and a casestudy based on the comparison between the source text and the target text. Bycomparison between the source text and the target text, we could figure out certaintypical and recurring relationships between the two texts; besides, there were stillnumerous uncommon and irregular relationships which were only suitable for a certainspecific situation (qtd. Cai yi, 1985). Hence, this dissertation mainly concerns thetypical and recurring relationships between the source text and the target text, taking thetranslator’s subjectivity as the core study, since the translator plays as a bridge rolebetween the two texts. As for the data, Wang Weidong’s Chinese version of Gulliver’s Travels, which isintended to juveniles as children’s literature, is chosen to be studied. In this study theauthor tries to analyze the translator’s subjectivity displayed by Wang Weidong in hisversion under the comparison with the source text from the perspective of theSkopostheorie.

  1.4 Research Significance研究意义
Gulliver’s Travels, as a controversial novel full of both critics and humors, is themasterpiece of the works written by Jonathan Swift. The satiric views of Swift towardsEnglish society and politics in the 18th century are expressed through fantasy plots andstories in the novel. This novel became very popular among the readers after its publication in 1726.Since then, it has been rendered into dozens of versions with different languages. However, this novel has been tra论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
