6.1 The Effects of Spatial Metaphor on Emotion-label and Emotion-laden Word Processing

The present study elucidated the interplay between emotional word processing and vertical space detection, revealing that vertical spatial metaphor play a crucial role both in the emotion-label word and emotion-laden word processing. In order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the results, this section analyzed the underlying causes and implications of the findings from three perspectives: (1) the task processing speed in the condition of different valence, (2) the task processing speed in the condition of different word type, (3) the task processing speed in the condition of different location.

6.1.1 The Analysis of Two Experiments on Valence

The results of Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 on valence need to be analyzed in the context of both the space detection task and the emotional word judgment task. In Experiment 1, when the words were negative, participants’ RT to space detection task was faster than their RT when the words were positive. As mentioned in Chapter 2, emotional information could seize attentional resources (Schindler & Kissler, 2016), and individuals show attentional bias for different emotion when processing emotional information (e.g., Bayer & Schacht, 2014; Espuny et al., 2018; Arioli et al., 2021). Emotional words have been shown to vary in their ability to capture attentional resources, with being characterized by positivity biased and negativity biased, respectively. Prior research has consistently demonstrated that individuals tend to exhibit a negativity bias when processing emotional information. For instance, Wentura et al. (2000) investigated emotional information processing and reported that emotional words elicited longer processing times compared to neutral words, suggesting an emotional bias when processing emotional words. Another study has also used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) techniques to examined the emotional word processing (Kensinger & Schacter, 2006).

7.1 Major Findings of the Study

This study conducted two experiments, each consisting of two tasks, which aimed to investigate the effects of vertical spatial metaphor on L2 emotional word processing.
