Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on the English Translation of The Scarecrow

The Scarecrow,written by the famous writer Ye Shengtao,contains 21 fairy talespublished from 1921 to 1922 and is regarded as the leading work of modern Chinese fairytales.Since its publication,Chinese fairy tales have ended the era of imitation andadaptation of foreign fairy tales.Ye Shengtao’s fairy tale is a masterpiece of content andform,and its emergence is a sign of the maturity of Chinese artistic fairy tales(Wang,2000:252).The translated text studied in this thesis was translated by the famous translator TangSheng in 1961,which selected and translated nine of the most classic short fairy tales in thecollection.The nine fairy tales include:“The Seed,”“The Scarecrow,”“The Statue of theAncient Hero,”“The Emperor’s New Clothes,”“The Sensitive Plant,“The Silkworm andthe Ant,”“The Language of Birds and Animals,”and“The Experience of a Locomotive.”These nine fairy tales,mainly through vivid characters,describe the harsh social reality.Their main characteristics are as follows.

Their mood is poetic.The fairy tales written by Ye Shengtao,beginning with the first,give people a new and refreshing feeling.He views the world through the innocent andbright eyes of children.Using romanticism and a light pen,he creates a fairy taleatmosphere full of fantasy and poetry by describing children’s charming smiles andmarvelous whims.

2.2 Previous Studies on Translation Deviation

Idealized presuppositions in scientific research are integral to knowing ideal objectivethings.Only in this way can the infinitely complex reality be simplified into patterns thatcan be expressed.In translation research,it is also necessary to use the idealization method.That is to presuppose an ideal source language text,an ideal translator,an ideal receiver,and a reception context to achieve a perfect state in translation-complete reciprocity.However,translation studies must recognize that translation,as a cross-linguistic andcross-cultural activity,determines that translation can only be a variation and deviation fromthe ideal state(Xin,2011).Even the most excellent thesis is still too much or not enoughcompared to the original.When translating,one can only try to shorten this distance asmuch as possible,seeking not to overdo it and not to underdo it.In which too much and notenough are forms of deviation.
