(2)Comparison of acquisition of French stops by Chinese learners withdifferent dialect backgrounds.
French learners are divided into two groups based on dialect backgrounds.Thedialect backgrounds are Wu dialects and non-Wu dialects(without voiced stops).Each group includes five second-year undergraduate of 2 years’French study,sixthird-year undergraduates of 3 years,and four fourth-year undergraduates of 4 years.By comparing the acoustic data and perceptual results of two groups of learners,theinfluence of dialect background on French stop acquisition was explored.

2.1 The nature of French stops
2.1.1 Acoustic Study of French Speakers
Stop consonants are found in all languages and they are strongly favored overfricatives in phonemic inventories across languages of the world(Henton,Ladefogedand Maddieson 1992).However,different languages have different divisions of stops,and their acoustic characteristics are different.Different acoustic parameters caneffectively reveal the characteristics of stops in each language.
The distinction between the phonologically voiced stops/b,d,g/and thephonologically voiceless stops/p,t,k/(as in the contrast between‘back’and‘pack’inEnglish)is conveyed by a patterned set of physiological and acoustic differences.These differences vary across languages and within each language as a function ofvarious contextual variables(e.g.,the position of the stop within the word,thesurrounding phonetic context,i.e.,voiced vs.voiceless;the speaking rate and style)(Abdelli-Beruh 2004).Over the past few decades,beginning with Lisker andAbramson’s[Lisker and Abramson 1964]study,a considerable number of studieshave investigated voicing contrasts in stops by the use of voice onset time(VOT).VOT has come to be regarded as one of the most important methods for examiningthe timing of voicing in stops(especially in word-initial position)and has beenapplied in studies of many languages including English,Thai,Spanish,etc.in the caseof citation speech.
Cross-language studies have shown that Voice Onset Time(VOT)is a sufficientcue to separate initial stop consonants into phonemic categories.Caramazza et al.(1973)used VOT as a linguistic cue in examining the perception and production ofstop consonants in three groups of subjects:unilingual Canadian French,unilingualCanadian English,and bilingual French-English speakers.Perception was studied byhaving subjects label synthetically produced stop-vowel syllables while productionwas assessed through spectrographic measurements of VOT in word-initial stops.Sixstop consonants,common to both languages,were used for these tasks.
