Moon, as a cognitive image, is shared by both Chinese and western people. Poets always place their emotions on moon no matter where he comes from. Thus, there are plenty of classical poems with moon have been handed down till now. Zhongguo Lidai Yongyue Shici Quanji(All Moon Chant in Chinese Previous Dynasties 中国历代咏月诗词全集)collects thousands of poems singing of moon from the Shang dynasty to the Qing dynasty. Quan Tang Shi (The Complete Collection of Tang Poems全唐诗) contains nearly all the poems in Tang dynasty. According to this book, the most famous and talented poet Li Bai has written more than 1000 poems in which the poems related to moon occupy one third. Comparatively, English poems with moon are much fewer, but still, “moon” is a popular poetic image beloved by western poets. Poets like Shelley, Keats and Dickinson have used the “moon” image many times. In China, “moon” culture has a long
history, and many ancient literary works contain the “moon” image. A plenty of ancient poems used “moon” as topic, artistic conception, or background. From Shijing (Book of Songs 诗经) numerous Chinese poets express the homesickness or lovesickness by singing the moon, and they also sigh with their sentimental or broad-minded emotion. The moon arouses their aspiration to serve the country, longing for home, dreams of beautiful life, and imagination of the universe. “the moon in China carries the national emotion”(Tian Zhangfu, 1992). Chinese poets regard moon as a media through which the feeling and the thought can be voiced. The best-known poets of China---Li Bai drains his loneliness and anguish in the line “Jubei Yao Mingyue, Duiying Cheng Sanren” (A toast to invite the moon, the shadow into three 举杯邀明月,对影成三人); Zhang Ji wrote down the line “Yueluo Wuti Shuangmantian, Jiangfeng Yuhuo Duichoumian” (the moon is gone, the crows are cawing in the frosty night, only the maple on the bank and lights in the fishing smack accompany with sleepless me 月落乌啼霜满天,江枫渔火对愁眠) after he failing the imperial competitive examination and this line express his desolation implicitly and skillfully. Since moon has a never-failing implication, there are lots of great works about moon in poetic circles. Moon passes down the emotions and culture through hundreds of years so that the descendants can talk to the predecessor and look for their soul.
