摘要:As is known to all, the target of book review is ordinary people. However, fewordinary readers read the books under review out of a large quantity of new books.Therefore, it is important for the book reviewer to arouse readers' interest and providenecessary information for them.
Chapter Five Analysis of Appraisals in Biographical Book Reviews
5.1 Statistical Results of Appraisal Resources in General
The main communicative goal of book reviews is to persuade readers to agree withthe reviewer about a new book,so they are embedded with lots of persuasive expressionsand evaluative resources to attract the putative readers. Biographical book review, as asubtype of this kind of feature articles, is also rich in various kinds of appraisals topersuade putative readers. But this kind of book reviews have its own characteristic ofappraisal frequency and configuration,therefore, the first step of this research is to find outthe proportion and function of appraisal resources in biographical book reviewrespectively. Table 5.1 indicates that in 15 samples of biographical book reviews 575 appraisalresources are adopted to be facilitative in achieving the goal of biographical book reviews,persuading putative reader and constructing interactive relationship between the writer andputative readers. The total numbers of Attitude, Engagement and Graduation are 287, 89and 199,with the percentage of 49.9%, 15.5% and 34.6% respectively.

Conclusion
The current study explores the appraisal features of biographical book reviews, agenre that has been largely neglected in the former appraisal studies of book review texts.The present study aims to analyze the proportion and configuration of appraisal resourcesand the construction of W-R interaction in biographical book reviews based on theAppraisal Theory. With respect to the research questions listed in Chapter Four, the majorfindings are presented as follows: Biographical book review, as a subtype of a genre of book review, is rich inappraisal resources. Among the three Appraisal values—Attitude, Engagement andGraduation, Attitude values and Graduation values outweigh the third one—Engagementvalues. It suggests that biographical book reviewers prefer to use attitudinal meanings toexpress their opinions on the books under review, and adopt grading meanings to increaseor decrease the force of their assertions to influence putative readers. While, Engagementvalues are used less to some extent to sharpen or blur the semantic categorizations inbiographical book reviews.
