摘要:The present study focuses on design of EAP courses at the postgraduate level. It isinspired by the researcher’s personal observation that Science and Engineering postgraduatesare often confronted with tasks through medium of English, such as publishing researchresults in English, attending international meetings, etc.
Chapter 4 Results and Discussion
4.1 Questionnaire I
In Dudley-Evans & St John’s model, the first area is also referred to as professionalinformation about learners, i.e., what they will be using English for, which actually covers thescope of target situation analysis and objective needs. In Questionnaire I, Part A is mainlyconcerned with target situation analysis. The target situation for postgraduates are examinedfrom three aspects, general situation, study and research situation, and after graduationsituation. Figure 4.1 and Table 4.1 show us that academic reading and writing are two Englishusing situations that occur to the students more often. The results of this question could giveus an overall view of postgraduates’ English using situation. Although postgraduates do useEnglish in various situations, apparently the academic situations occur to them morefrequently. As is widely known, academic reading are indispensible task for Science andEngineering postgraduate, however, little survey data can be seen about how much academicwriting and oral discussion tasks students have, Question Two and Three are designed toinvestigate them:

Conclusion
The first area is the professional information about Science and Engineeringpostgraduates which is actually about what the students will be using English for. From thedata obtained from Questionnaire I, we can see that academic English using situations occurto students very often no matter during the school time or in their future work. When it comesto specific skills, academic reading and writing skills are more important than oral skills tostudents’ study and research, but the four skills are thought to be equally important for theirfuture work. Compared to students, supervisors attach greater importance to students’academic English competence. In supervisors’ perspective, student’s academic reading andwriting skills are also more important than speaking and listening skills. The second area includes personal information about learners such as their attitudetowards academic English, their wants from the courses and any other subjective needs.Related inquiry items indicate that quite a lot postgraduates hope that English can be a helpfultool for their professional study and research. Meanwhile many of them are not satisfied withthe current English curriculum, and hope new content could be added into it. Most of themconsider academic reading course necessary, and though postgraduates don’t have manyopportunities to use English in academic context, their desire to improve oral ability is quitestrong. As to writing, students wish they could learn the whole process of academic writingand the related academic norms.
