Chapter 5 The Use of Evidentiality in English RAs bythe Native and Chinese Scholars

5.1 Distribution of Three Types of Evidentials in English RAs inboth Corpora
Based on the study of the lexical realizations for evidenials in its three types and withthe help of the Wordsmith Tool 5.0，this section aims to study the distribution featuresof the three types of evidentials in RAs in our data. For convenience，in the followingstudy, Corpus A is used to stand for the corpus established from the RAs by theEnglish native scholars and Corpus B is used to stand for the corpus established fromthe English RAs by the Chinese scholars and the short form-Fre. is used to stand forthe frequency of evidentials in the both corpora in the following tables or figures. Since Science as one of the top-level magazines in the world，itsrequirements of English RAs is obviously different from those of China's ImportantConference Papers in English, thus there exists a gap between the average lengths ofEnglish RAs from the two corpora. From the statistics, we see that the overall numberof the words of the English RAs in Corpus A is almost twice as much as that ofEnglish RAs in Corpus B. In order to have a reasonable and valid contrastive study ofRAs in the corpora, the frequencies of evidentials of the same type are calculated andcompared in the standardized per thousand words. The following tables and figuresshow us the details.

Conclusion

Evidentiality, as a linguistic phenomenon, is interpersonal by nature. This studycarries out a contrastive analysis on the use of evidentiality in English RAs by thenative and Chinese scholars in the field of Life Science. The research shows that thelexical linguistic realizations for evidentiality not only reflects the information sourceand the mode of acquiring information，but also present the writers' strategies inchoosing types of evidentials and linguistic realizations. This study is conducted bothquantitatively and qualitatively. With the help of Wordsmith 5.0, SPSS, Excel andbased on the data obtained from the corpora, the thesis points out the followingfindings.First，through the observation and data-coding of the corpus A and B，togetherwith the specific characteristics of the genre of English RAs, the study focuses on theresearch of the explicit evidentials and classified explicit evidentials into three typesin English RAs in our sample. The three types of explicit evidentials examined in thisresearch are sensory evidentials，reporting evidentials, and inferring evidentials. Thereporting evidentials is ftuther divided into three subtypes, the self-reportingevidentials, specific quotatives and unspecific quotatives.
