Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

With the rapid development and wide application of multimedia and the Internet,the traditional written discourse analysis has been unable to meet the needs ofinformation exchange in the new era.Based on this,Kress and Van(1996)and otherscholars have proposed a new research perspective,multimodal discourse analysis.Itnot only studies the role of verbal modality in communication,but also studies the roleof non-linguistic modality such as figures and sounds in meaning construction.However,the focus of multimodal discourse analysis is restricted solely to theinterpretation and meaning construction of diverse modalities,but in fact,non-linguistic modalities can also convey ideology,such as inequality,unfairness,power,and reflect social phenomena such as gender discrimination.Critical discourseanalysis aims to investigate the underlying ideology and power relations within the text.As a result,multimodal critical discourse analysis becomes a new research trend indiscourse analysis,advocating a critical exploration of multimodal texts by focusing onthe ideology and power relations hidden in non-linguistic modalities.

The concept of multimodal critical discourse analysis(MDA)was initiallyproposed by Machin and Mayr in 2012,establishing upon the rules of both multimodaldiscourse analysis and critical discourse analysis.It highlights the significance ofnon-verbal modalities of communication,such as figures and sounds,can constructdiscourse meaning.Current research in this field has mainly focused on staticdiscourses such as posters,with less research on dynamic discourse.

1.2 Purpose of the Study

Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework theory,this thesis starts fromthe perspective of multimodal critical discourse analysis and takes the film Child ofDeaf Adults as the research object.Firstly,the verbal modality is quantitativelyanalyzed by UAM Corpus Tool 6.2,and then the characteristics of the verbal modality,the visual modality,and the auditory modality are presented respectively throughspecific examples.The next step is to research how the three modalities work togetherto construct the meaning of the movie.The ultimate goal is to present how the ideologyand power in society affect the movie expression,to understand the intention of the movie,and to prompt the public to pay attention to the deaf-mute people to have aharmonious society.Under this background,this thesis decides to analyze the film Child of DeafAdults.Through the analysis,on the one hand,it can increase our understanding of thespecific shots of the movie;on the other hand,he utilization of concepts related tomultimodal critical discourse analysis not only promotes its theoretical foundation,butalso enriches the study of the movie and improves the study of critical discourseanalysis of the movie.
