4.1 Verbal Description of the Captions

According to Halliday’s systemic functional grammar,the analysis of verbalmodality is based on the movie captions,i.e.,the characters’words.Analysis of theverbal modality focuses on its transitivity at the ideational level and its modality at theinterpersonal level.

4.1.1 Ideational Level

As we discussed the systemic functional grammar in Chapter 3,the transitivityconsists of six processes,including material,mental,verbal,relational,behavioral andexistential processes.Thus,this part will explore the types of processes in moviecaptions to understand the verbal features of film.Here are the distributions andpercentage of transitivity:

5.1 Major Findings

This thesis analyzes the film by Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework,visualgrammar,and auditory grammar to answer the three research questions.The findingsare as follows:

First of all,in verbal modality,linguistic features are analyzed through systemicfunctional linguistics.In the transitive system,material processes,relational processesand mental processes are preferred.In the modal system,there is a tendency to usemedian modal verbs,especially“will”,followed by low modal verbs.The low modalverbs are mild in tone and win the audience’s approval.Using the above systems,verbal modality conveys different views and meanings through characters of differentstatus and position.

Secondly,in visual modality,the film Child of Deaf Adults explains the livingconditions of the characters and their relationship through the layout of different scenes.In terms of representational meaning,it reveals the basic situation of deaf-mute familythrough narrative process and conceptual process,reflecting the conflicts between thedeaf-mute people and the society and the conflict in the deaf-mute family.In term ofinteractive meaning,it reveals the characters’emotional changes.It also reveals thedilemma and ambivalence within the characters through contact.In addition,the livingenvironment of the deaf-mute family is illustrated through social distance,whichreflects the difficult life of able-bodied people living in a deaf-mute family.Throughthe perspective,what the director want to express is that the deaf-mute family willnever get enough attention and they are always in论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
