Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies of Authorial Identity

The concept of authorial identity belongs to the category of identity,which exists in theinteraction between the author and the reader and is realized through the interpersonalmeaning of the discourse.Scholars in related fields have not yet reached a consensus on thedefinition of author identity,and multiple terms related to'author identity'have emerged inprevious research.In addition,the characteristics of author identity in academic discourse aregradually being improved.

2.1.1 Concepts Related to Identity

The term'identity'is difficult to define because researchers from different disciplinesdon't agree on the distinction between terms like'voice,''persona'and'ethos'.Thesedifferent terms have their own meanings depending on the perspective of their subject area.

The first thing to mention is the word'voice'.From the perspective of compositionteaching,Bowden(1999)defines sound as a metaphor'associated with feeling,hearing,perceiving the person behind the written word,even if that person is only a character createdfor a particular text or a particular reading'.While Cummins(1994)uses the term'voice'tosuggest that the essence of sound is an activity,a process,rather than a fixed or final productto be measured in an article.

2.2 Previous Studies of Metadiscourse

Since its proposal by Zellig Harris in 1959,metadiscourse has received increasingattention from linguists and language researchers.Although later scholars such as Lautamatti(1978),Williams(1981),Vande Kopple(1985),Crismore(1989),and Hyland(1998)developed this concept,the same language use is often referred to as different terminology.Due to the ambiguity of metadiscourse,scholars have proposed various definitions andclassifications of this term based on their respective understandings.Therefore,the followingsection will briefly introduce these definitions and classifications,and then elaborate on theapplication of metadiscourse,proposing research gaps.

2.2.1 Concept of Metadiscourse

In 1959,Harris proposed the concept of metadiscourse,but he only briefly introducedand explained this linguistic phenomenon,aiming to provide a method for understandinglanguage use and indicating that the author/speaker guides the audience to understand the discourse.Later,many scholars conducted research on this concept.Until 1981,Williamsfirst applied the term metadiscourse to the field of writing,defining it as'writing aboutwriting'and considering it as'all components of a discourse that do not involve thematiccontent.'.Thus,the term metadiscourse was widely accepted and used by people(VandeKopple,1985:23;Crismore,1989:14;成晓光,1997:16).
