Finally, the third aim of this thesis is to reveal the new farmers’ identities constructed by the media and to summarize the social images of new farmers that the media mainly present to the public, so as to update the public’s perception of the new farmers and new agriculture, strengthen the public’s identification with social values, and promote agricultural technology development and rural revitalization.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Previous Studies on Identity Construction

The study of identity construction originated in the field of sociology and has been turning towards linguistics, and many linguists have conducted research from the perspective of identity construction. This chapter provides a review of the relevant research on identity construction theory in the field of linguistics. The research on identity construction theory in the field of linguistics mainly focuses on the following aspects.

2.1.1 Studies from Linguistic Perspective

Many scholars study identity construction from different linguistic perspectives. Harvey sacks, the earliest sociologist, put forward the Conversation Analysis theory to study the identity construction, aiming to develop a new sociological research method to scientifically observe society and social behavior. Conversational analysis theory points out that identity is related to context and believes that “self” is the product of communication, which also reflects the identity view of constructivism. In addition, the conversational analysis focuses on the turn and sequence of discourse, which is an extension of Symbolic Interaction theory. In 1992, Sacks proposed the member classification analysis theory. Like conversation analysis, member classification analysis can be used to analyze speech interaction and text practice. With the deepening of the study of identity construction, some linguists have incorporated the study of identity construction into the research category of pragmatics. For example, Brown and Levinson put forward the politeness principle, which recognizes the existence and function of identity to a certain extent. 

2.2 Previous Studies on Conceptual Metaphor and Framing Theory

In recent years, the combination of conceptual metaphor and framing theory has become a new research direction in the field of cognitive linguistics. Many scholars have conducted extensive studies combining news media reports, speeches of national leaders and other corpus. This chapter will sort out the relevant literature on the combination of conceptual metaphor theory and framing theory. 

Scholars have done extensive research on conceptual metaphors and extended the research scope of conceptual metaphors to various fields. At first, “frame” was widely used in the field of artificial intelligence and psychology, and then gradually applied to the field of linguistics through the development of Fillmore and Lakoff. And scholars’ research on metaphorical framing mainly focuses on the following aspects.

2.2.1 Studies from Political Discourse Perspective
