Chapter Five Discussion
This study is designed to test if the fifteen off-record sub-strategies can beused to explain the ISA in romantic conversations, and to find the distributions ofthose strategies used by female and male, and to find out the respectiveconsequences after using certain sub-strategy. In this chapter, a discussion of ISA inromantic conversations and the availability of off-record strategy in explaining ISAwill be shown below.
5.1 ISA in Romantic Conversations
Previous studies many draw attention on the conversations between parents andchildren, teachers and students, friends, and colleagues, or on the genderlect. Rarelyfocus on the study of ISA in the conversation between lovers.Wilmot (1987) claims that romantic relationship is the closest relationshipamong the other interpersonal relationships. Thomas (1995) believes that the closerthe social distance is, the more direct the speech act will be. Leech (1983) finds thatthe first and primary reason why people use ISA is to be polite. However, it still existamounts of ISA used in lovers’ conversations. After data collection, the author findsthat even the closest lovers, they also use ISA frequently and in different situations. The author divides the romantic relationship into two phases, they are conflictphase and non-conflict phase. This study analyzes the frequency of ISA used byfemale and male. Though the previous studies like Ervin (1990) and Rundquist(1992) proved that women are more cooperative than men in daily communicationsand women are less frequent to flout the CP, this study finds that no matter inconflict phase or in non-conflict phase, women employ ISA more frequently thanmen. In chapter four, the author analyzes the distribution of these fifteensub-strategies in conflict phase and non-conflict phase through showing the specificstatistics. At the same time, the distribution of the sub-strategies which are used bywomen are uneven. Women tend to employ some of the sub-strategies intensively. This
thesis finds that women use the off-record sub-strategies --- “give hints” and“use rhetorical questions” more frequently than men. Women always employsub-strategies “give hints” to avoid direct confrontation in conflict phase (see theexample 4-12) and to express the indirect refusal in non-conflict phase (see theexample 4-33). As for the sub-strategy “use rhetorical questions”, women oftenemploy it to express their anger (see the example 4-11) in conflict phase and to avoidthreatening the other side’s face in non-conflict phase (see the example 4-31).Furthermore, this confirms that factors, including the social status and the relativepower, should take into consideration. In Gossip Girl, female characters like Lily,Serena, and Blair have a higher social status, they are easily to flout the CP. Anotherimportant factor that affects the use of ISA is personal character. Taking Blair asexample, she has a distinct character. Facing different people, she will totally usedifferent styles of language. To lover, she is strong, but when she
