100 chapters. As one of the Four Masters' Works, it isquite different from the other three works. First, it is characterized by fairy tales. Second,the stories in the book are not created by one author but circulated among the people.After recreating these stories, the contribution of Wu Cheng’ en is that he recreated thestories and made them more systematic in the structure and more charming in the plot. Inthis romantic novel exist four major characters, that is, the master Tang Monk and threeapprentices, Prilgrim, Eight Rules, and Sha Monk. The society in this book is afeudal society which is formed by three worlds, the Heaven, the Earth, and theUnderworld and ruled by the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues. All in all,Journey to the West has great artistic accomplishments. The language in Journey to theWest is very colloquial, vivid and expressive.In this chapter, we will list the classifications of advice in Journey to the West,analyze the typical linguistic features of advice-giving speech act and then try toconclude the general strategies of advising as a speech act in Journey to the West, and atthe end of this chapter we will explain the adaptabilities of the speech act ofadvice-giving so as to figure out how it can be realized in Journey to the West.

Conclusion
Based on Speech Act Theory and Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory, this thesis hasmade a detailed analysis of advice-giving speech act in Journey to the West. It studiedhow the advice-giving speech act is performed in Journey to the West based on SpeechAct Theory and the reasons why advice can be realized in Journey to the West from theperspective of Adaptation Theory. Through these studies and discussion, the thesis hasattained the two following findings.The first finding is about the question how advice is performed in Journey to theWest. The thesis gives out the answer from three angles: the classifications of advice, thegeneral features of advice and the strategies of advice-giving in Journey to the West.Concerning the classification of advice, four kinds of advice are listed, namely initiativeadvice, introductory advice, simple advice and complex advice. About the generalfeatures of advice in Journey to the West, we find that the words like 罢(“ba”), 吧(“ba”),且(“qie”), 可(“can”) , 不可(“cannot”), 不必(“need not”), 不若(“why not”), 须(“should”) , 不须(“should not)” ,不要 (“do not”), 莫要(“do not”), 休(“do not”), 切勿(“do not”) are frequently used as pragmatic markers in Journey to the West. And inJourney to the West, most speech acts of advice-giving are performed in the declarativesentences. The proportion of interrogative sentences is less and the proportion ofimperative sentences is the least. And about the strategies of advice-giving speech act inJourney to the West, the use of addressing terms, explanations, results, and praise withadvice are main strategies involved in this book.
