2.2 Introduction of Appraisal Theory
Since its emergency, appraisal theory, as one of the most frequently discussed topics in the research attracts a lot of scholars’ attention to exploring it. By studying the interpersonal meanings at the discourse semantics level, Martin and his colleagues (Martin, 2000; Martin and Rose, 2003; Martin &White, 2005) have newly developed appraisal theory. In the following part, an overview of appraisal theory and its subsystems are made and the research is conducted under the appraisal theory. The study of evaluation theory, also known as the evaluation system, begins in the 1990s and it is regarded as the SFL (system-functional linguistic) extension in the category of interpersonal meaning (Li Zhanzi, 2001). Evaluation system language users (writer / speaker) apply language to express their attitudes and degree of involvement for others, places, things, events (Wang Zhenhua, 2001). Halliday (2000) also proposes that language, as a communication tool used by a social person in a certain context and the study of language structure, its function is mainly made from the perspective of social and cultural context.
